What Not to Do Someone You Know Is Grieving
How to be there for someone who is mourning without overstepping...
When someone is grieving, it’s natural to want to help, but some actions, even with good intentions, can unintentionally pressure the person mourning.
Here are things to avoid:
Don’t visit the person mourning expecting to be hosted or fed
Don’t demand conversation or updates
Don’t send random motivational or “be strong” videos
Don’t police how someone grieves
Don’t teach people how to grieve
Grief is personal and unpredictable and sometimes the most meaningful support is simply to be present, listen, and show up without expectation.
Practical ways to support someone grieving can make a big difference. Instead consider:
Sending a meal or groceries so they don’t have to worry about errands
Helping tidy up their space or arranging a cleaning service
Offering financial support for funeral or memorial expenses
Taking them on a quiet walk
Praying for them everyday
You can also watch the video where my guest Ayo shared the story of losing her only sister to a medical complication during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia), how that loss changed her life forever, and how she learned to navigate grief.
Whether you are grieving yourself or want to support someone who is, this episode offers guidance, comfort, and practical ways to show up.
You can also download the Grief & Support Care Kit, which includes prayers for those who are grieving and more practical ways to support someone through loss.
